This edition was produced on occasion of Cerith Wyn Evans’ seminal solo exhibition of the same name at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (September – October 2006). Created as an artwork extending the logic of the exhibition, this edition comprises 118 colour photographs sequenced within a clear plastic photo album.

Taken by Evans during a trip to Japan, these photographs provide a subjective exploration of place as seen through the eyes of the artist. Repeated views of recognisable sites such as the dry garden of the Ryōan-ji and the golden Kinkaku-ji temple are interspersed with moments of incidental focus, documenting qualities of light, architectural details and urban atmospheres. The images are ordered with a subtle temporal arc that moves from day to night, emphasising both the inherent temporality of the photograph and the artist’s interest in evanescence.

The modest form of this photo album invites the viewer to share and distribute its contents, embracing the materiality of the photograph and by extension diminishing the artwork’s hermeticism. While cohering a personal sense of place, the structured rhythm of Evans’ photographs reflects on occlusion and revelation, visibility and invisibility, as well as the mimetic potential of the snapshot.
