Sarah Morris unveils new commission at New York City Center

New York City Center has commissioned Sarah Morris to create a new site-specific painting for their Grand Tier Lobby. The large-scale work, titled Waltz of the Snowflakes [Nutcracker], responds to the building’s architecture and its status as one of New York’s most distinctive cultural landmarks.

Morris draws on City Center’s history as the original home of George Balanchine’s New York City Ballet and the site of his celebrated first staging of ‘The Nutcracker’ in 1954. In Waltz of the Snowflakes [Nutcracker], rhythmic geometric forms, intersecting layers and bold shifts in colour evoke institution’s architecture, as well as its longstanding connection to dance and music.
