Mona Hatoum creates new permanent commission for Gare Le Bourget Aéroport

Posted:

Mona Hatoum has been commissioned to create a new permanent installation for Le Bourget Aéroport station in Paris, developed in dialogue with architect Jacques Pajot of Atelier Novembre.

The work takes the form of a four-metre globe suspended from the station’s ceiling. Constructed from stainless steel and white LED light, the sculpture traces the contours of a world map to create a luminous outline of a globe, through which the station’s surrounding architecture remains visible.

The sculpture extends Hatoum’s longstanding engagement with maps and global geographies, addressing concerns including borders, mobility, conflict and displacement.

The commission is part of the Grand Paris Express public art programme, which brings together artists and architects to create permanent works for stations across the city.
