Georg Baselitz at Galleria degli Antichi

27 April - 24 November 2024

Sabbioneta, Italy

The Sabbioneta Heritage Foundation presents a solo exhibition by Georg Baselitz at Galleria degli Antichi. Titled ‘Belle Haleine’, the presentation will feature a selection of Baselitz’s large-scale sculptures and paintings, as well as ten prints, shown together for the first time in Italy.

The exhibition will be on view throughout the Galleria degli Antichi, which stands as the second-longest frescoed gallery corridor in Italy after the Uffizi.

Speaking of the title, ‘Belle Haleine’, the exhibition’s curator Mario Codognato, has said: ‘The name is derived from a piece by Marcel Duchamp, an artist to whom Baselitz often makes reference, in rejecting his claim, made in the early 20th century, that painting was dead. Baselitz continues to undermine this claim through painted pastiches of the words and works of Duchamp, in a kind of "processing through an opponent”’.
