'Baselitz – The Retrospective' at Centre Pompidou, Paris

20 October 2021 - 7 March 2022

Baselitz – The Retrospective brings together masterpieces from the last six decades of the German artist's career. Presented in chronological order, the exhibition reveals Georg Baselitz's creative trajectory and includes some of his most striking work; from early paintings and the Pandemonium manifesto, through to the 'Heroes' series, 'Fractured' compositions, inverted motifs and 'Remix' works.

Baselitz has said 'I was born in the midst of a destroyed order, a landscape in ruins, a people in ruins, a society in ruins. And I didn't want to introduce a new order. I had seen more than enough of so-called orders. I was forced to call everything into question. I had to be 'naïve' all over again, begin again.'

Exposing his continual and varied experimentation of themes, and conceptual approach to both figuration and abstraction, this major solo survey show showcases Baselitz's important and self-reflexive position within modern art history.
