Published on the occasion of Gabriel Orozco’s major solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey (September – November 2026), Chronotopic charts more than three decades of the artist’s expansive and experimental practice, spanning diverse modes of making, material enquiry and conceptual investigation. Taking its title from the Greek chronos (time) and topos (space), the publication extends an almost 25-year collaboration between Orozco and writer and curator Briony Fer. Across 92 individual entries, Fer engages with the speculative nature of the artist’s work, illuminating the associative and conceptual threads that define its many diverse forms.

Designed by Studio Mathias Clottu, the publication’s rich selection of images brings together works in progress, installation views, pages from Orozco’s notebooks, prototypes and models alongside realised artworks, offering readers an immersive view into a practice animated by play and an abiding fascination with the expressive possibilities of the physical world. This close attention to the everyday sits alongside Orozco’s interest in broader systems of thought and imagination, from music and archaeology to science fiction, geometry and the cosmos, drawing disparate disciplines and fields of knowledge into relation.

Briony Fer is an art historian who has written extensively on modern and contemporary art. Her research interests have always moved between the history of the avant-gardes and the work of contemporary artists. Her books include On Abstract Art (1997), The Infinite Line (2004) and Eva Hesse: Studiowork (2009). She has worked closely with Gabriel Orozco over many years, first contributing an essay to the catalogue of his exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 2004. She subsequently curated ‘Gabriel Orozco: Thinking in Circles’ at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, in 2013. Most recently, in 2025, she curated a major exhibition of Orozco’s work, ‘Politécnico Nacional’, at the Museo Jumex in Mexico City. She is Professor Emeritus at University College London.
