London Original Print Fair

Dates

20 – 23 March 2025

Location

Stand S7, Somerset House, London

White Cube participates in the 40th edition of the London Original Print Fair at Somerset House this spring. Celebrating printmaking in all its forms, London Original Print Fair is the city’s longest running art fair.

The gallery brings together a curated selection of works by leading women artists who use prints and multiples as a means of expression and a space for experimentation. Artists presented include Christine Ay Tjoe, Julie Curtiss, Tracey Emin, Louise Giovanelli, Mona Hatoum, Rachel Kneebone, Virginia Overton and Ilana Savdie.

Presented to coincide with Mona Hatoum’s (b. 1952, Beirut, to a Palestinian family) solo exhibition at White Cube Seoul, the booth features the artist's lithograph Untitled (whisks) (2018).

Expanding on Hatoum’s early incorporation of kitchen utensils in her work, Untitled (whisks) exemplifies a key tenet of the artist’s sculptural practice: the appropriation of domestic objects to witty, often surreal effect. In the production of this work, the photographic image of the whisks was solarised and the background printed twice. The resultant deepening of the black creates a velvety effect, making the whisks appear as if they are emerging out of the black surface.

Julie Curtiss’ work often focuses on the absurdities of life and the reworkings of female archetypes, infusing figurative and highly symbolic scenes with seductive details, deadpan humour and a latent erotic charge. While often influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock prints in the making of her work, Horse Chestnut marks Curtiss’ first use of the medium.

Informed by time spent in Japan, Curtiss collaborated with The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, Tokyo, an organisation that continues the tradition of Japanese woodcut print techniques, including the Edo-period practice of ukiyo-e. Facilitating a meticulous realisation of detail, the tactility of the hand-carved woodcut fittingly translates the complexities of Curtiss’ compositions, accentuating the conflicting tones, crisp outlines and the variety of textures characteristic of her paintings.

Louise Giovanelli’s lithograph Tide depicts a closely cropped view of highly glossed, wavy hair. The work belongs to a series of paintings by Giovanelli which feature tight frames of wigs, continuing the artist’s interest in light and its relationship to texture. Here, light both accentuates and complicates its subject, allowing a knowingly figural detail to become metaphysical.

In Prairie (green), we encounter partially abstracted emerald curtains that gently gather on the floor. Unable to see beyond the partition, and with context ambiguous, Giovanelli’s lavish hanging curtains invite imaginative and associative thinking across its undulant surface.

Released for the London Original Print Fair, Rachel Kneebone’s Medallion is a porcelain work that centres upon a smooth scrying orb framed by cascading ribbon-like folds and diminutive curls suggestive of roses. Intricately adorned, Kneebone’s medallions highlight the sculptor’s remarkable command of the fragile yet enduring medium for which she is known.

Every Medallion in the series of 25 is unique, and each serves as both a gesture of devotion and a keepsake to cherish.

It was all About Loving you was produced in response to the escalation of conflict in Ukraine. All proceeds from this edition are donated to charities supporting Ukraine.

Depicted through a series of swift lines, a figure reclines alone in a state of longing and desire, apparently caught between despair and ecstasy. As fellow artist Julian Schnabel has observed: ‘[Emin’s] need to be honest supersedes all decisions in her life and art. The crystalline presentation of the most intimate and private emotions are what she wants to share with us.’
