Katharina Grosse at MUNCH

MUNCH presents ‘Katharina Grosse: Black Bed’ this September. The exhibition takes its title from a newly produced site-related painting that reimagines one of Grosse’s most recognisable works, Das Bett (2004). In Das Bett, the artist spray-painted her entire bedroom in Dusseldorf, destroying her belongings in the process. The work marked a turning point in Grosse’s practice, introducing a more symbolic and narrative dimension to her work.

Grosse has long regarded Munch as an artistic influence, particularly his painting The Sun (1910–11). With its unsettling presence, Grosse sees Black Bed (2026) as establishing a connection to the emotional and psychological themes of Munch’s work. Leading up to the exhibition, Grosse has spent time in Munch’s studio, creating new works that extend the dialogue between the two artists.
