Michael Armitage speaks with Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery in London, as part of the ‘Frieze Talks’ online events programme.

Armitage and Rugoff will discuss the artist’s participation in the Southbank Centre’s outdoor art and poetry exhibition ‘Everyday Heroes’, which celebrates the contributions that key workers and frontline staff have made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the project, Armitage has contributed one of forty portraits of people who have helped keep the country running in these difficult times, alongside contemporary artists such as Lydia Blakeley, Jeremy Deller, Mahtab Hussain, Silvia Rosi, Juergen Teller, Caroline Walker and Barbara Walker.

At the La Biennale di Venezia 2019, Rugoff curated the 58th International Art Exhibition 'May You Live In Interesting Times', which feauted work by Armitage in the Central Pavilion in the Giardini and Arsenale.

Curated by Dr. Nicholas Cullinan (Director, National Portrait Gallery), the Frieze Talks programme features internationally renowned artists in conversation with leading curators. This year the programme will be hosted digitally via Zoom and will subsequently be available to watch online at Frieze.com.

‘Everyday Heroes’ continues at the Southbank Centre until 30 November 2020. Visit southbankcentre.co.uk for more information.
