‘Critical Mass’, a solo exhibition of works by Antony Gormley, opens at Musée Rodin this autumn. The exhibition spans all areas of the museum, including its gardens, Marble Galerie and Hotel Biron. Taking key sculptures made over the course of his career, Gormley’s work enters into a dialogue with Rodin’s, highlighting both artists’ interest in the representation of the body through sculpture.

Central to the exhibition is Critical Mass II (1995), an installation of 60 life-sized sculptures crawling, squatting, kneeling and standing, making reference to Rodin’s The Gates of Hell (1880–1917). For Gormley, 'the work references the materiality of sculpture and our dependency on the materiality of the body, both being subject to position, context and jeopardy'.
