Antony Gormley at KMSKA

KMSKA presents an exhibition of works by Antony Gormley, curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. Titled ‘Geestgrond’, the exhibition explores the depth of Gormley’s oeuvre whilst interacting with works from the museum's permanent collection. Unfolding across the museum’s halls and extending outdoors, ‘Geestgrond’ responds to the architecture of the building.

The exhibition’s title, ‘Geestgrond’, is a deliberately resistant word whose meaning lies in tension rather than resolution. Combining the Dutch words ‘geest’ (spirit, mind, breath) with grond (earth, soil, foundation), the term binds weight to thought and matter to spirit, grounding what thinks and giving density to what seems immaterial. Both linguistic and geological, ‘Geestgrond’ evokes the sandy, Ice Age–formed terrains, native to the Low Countries, shaped through long cultivation and care. The title refuses the split between the spiritual and the material, the human and the planetary.
