Published to mark Darren Almond’s solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey (January – April 2014), this catalogue surveys the artist’s longstanding work with photography in extensive detail. Central to both the exhibition and this publication is Almond’s acclaimed ‘Fullmoon’ series of photographs, initiated in 1998, which capture remote landscapes of natural beauty under moonlight using long exposures.

Designed by (Studio) Jonathan Hares, the generous illustrations within this publication offer a comprehensive record of the atmospheric qualities and disquieting sublimity that comprise this landmark series. Also featured are the artist’s absorbing ‘Present Forms’, photographs of standing stones that populate the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Exploring these dreamscapes of geological wonder and their seemingly liminal topographies, art historian and critic TJ Demos navigates Almond’s approach to landscape traditions and his ‘thoroughly technologized’ meditations on nature. Through text, image, form and material, this publication provides a lasting record of the artist’s studious and sensitive engagement with time.

TJ Demos is an award-winning writer, art historian and cultural critic, as well as Professor of Visual Culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz and Director of its Center for Creative Ecologies. He writes widely about contemporary art, global politics and ecology.
