This print by Christian Marclay translates the effect of sound and onomatopoeia into a collaged composition. Using fragments from comic strips, Marclay isolates details of words or phrases that convey sound. Carefully arranged into an explosive composition, the arrangement compounds the various effects of the sampled sounds. Expanding the description of sound, Krrump Thup! (2013) gives a new, gestural materiality to onomatopoeia.

Marclay’s use of collage can be read as part of the artist’s broader practice of deconstruction, where reconfigurations address recording and editing as sculptural processes, and time itself as material.
