Christine Ay Tjoe’s gestural practice is rooted in an exploration of the fundamental principles of drawing and its expressive potential. In this lithograph, a medium in perfect harmony with her painting process and which the artist has mastered over a number of years, Ay Tjoe investigates the potential darkness within the human soul.
As with her paintings, Ay Tjoe employs a refined abstract language developed out of extensive drawing studies of the plants and flora surrounding her studio in Bandung, Indonesia. The print features highly animated lines, densely overlaid and clustered together to create a dramatic and forceful composition. This accumulated mass of abstract mark-making suggests an organic form which loosely resembles plant roots or tumbleweed, out of which fine tendrils emerge like hairline cracks that have spread from a point of force.
Always Floating In A Constant Distance is printed using an aluminium plate onto which Ay Tjoe had drawn with lithographic crayons. A series of these aluminium plates were part of her 2018 solo exhibition in London and her 2021 show in Hong Kong.
