Richard Hunt’s work ‘Opposed Forms’ (1965) acquired by Kunstmuseum Basel

Basel, Switzerland

Kunstmuseum Basel has acquired Richard Hunt’s 1965 work Opposed Forms. The sculpture joins the museum’s Abstract Expressionism collection featuring works by Mark Rothko, Franz Kline and Clyfford Still, on view in the Neubau building.

Opposed Forms is a chromed steel sculpture that combines many of Hunt’s protean experimentations with structure, volume and extended form. A tangled mass of metal balanced on three attenuated legs, the work is delicately poised between abstraction and figuration, bringing together influences from industrial, machinic forms with Surrealist biomorphism.
