Inaugurating the Pinault Collection earlier this spring, a retrospective by David Hammons continues through December, as part of a wider programme curated by François Pinault.

This exhibition features around 30 works, spanning from his body prints of the late 1960s and ’70s to his arresting assemblages of the 2000s, installed in the large gallery of the new museum space. One of the most revealing and harrowing pieces on show is Minimum Security (2007–20), a cage-like structure with metal bedframes, installed in front of a colonial map of the world that was restored in the 19th century and preserved as a mural in the Bourse de Commerce, which was formerly the Paris stock exchange. After seeing a video of the mural, Hammons submitted this rarely seen work, which was influenced by a visit to the cells of those held on death row at San Quentin State Prison.
