Julie Mehretu designed the set for ‘Only the Sound Remains’ at the Teatro Real, Madrid. Director Peter Sellars combines two short operas inspired by Japanese Nôh dramas, ‘Always Strong’ and ‘Feather Mantle’, into a full-length performance in ‘Only the Sound Remains’.

The opera was performed in Amsterdam in 2016, Helsinki in 2017 and Paris in 2018 prior to its premiere in Madrid.
