Longlati Foundation in Shanghai presents ‘The First Capriole for Tomorrow’, a solo exhibition by Christine Ay Tjoe, curated by Sun Wenjie.

Spanning two galleries, the exhibition brings together paintings and a site-specific installation. In the installation, typewriters are suspended from tracks near the ceiling, while others are positioned along a curved gallery wall. Referencing Ay Tjoe’s 2010 work Lama Sabakhtani #03, the installation continues her longstanding engagement with the typewriter.

The exhibition’s title refers to a capriole, an upward leap. As the artist explains: ‘All the works I have created for this exhibition embody a “leap” – a transition from one moment to another: from yesterday or today toward tomorrow, or from an unfavorable state to a better one.’
