Anselm Kiefer at Palazzo Reale

Posted:

7 February – 26 September 2026

Milan, Italy

An exhibition of works by Anselm Kiefer opens at Palazzo Reale this February. Titled ‘Le Alchimiste’ (‘The Alchemist’), the exhibition was born from a project started in 2023, and will present over 40 large-scale canvases against the backdrop of the Palazzo’s Sala delle Cariatidi.

In ‘The Alchemist’, Kiefer looks to female figures – both forgotten and well known – who are strongly rooted in the history of Milan. Intertwining themes of myth, memory and regeneration, Kiefer references writers and alchemists who have previously been erased from history, such as Caterina Sforza, Isabella Cortese, Maria la Giudea, Marie Meudrac, Rebecca Vaughan and Mary Anne Atwood.

Curated by art historian Gabriella Belli, the exhibition is part of the cultural programme of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
