Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero presents an exhibition by Anselm Kiefer in the main hall of the former Valeriola Palace, now converted into the museum. The exhibition includes three large-scale works from the Hortensia Herrero Collection: Böse Blumen (Evil Flowers) (2012–16), Der Tod und das Mädchen (Death and the Maiden) (2018) and Walhalla (2015–17).

The works on view reflect how Kiefer’s practice merges art and literature, drawing on a wide range of cultural, literary and philosophical references, from the Old and New Testament and the Kabbalah, to Nordic mythology and the writings of Charles Baudelaire, Jean Genet and Paul Celan.

As the artist has said: ‘I think in pictures. Poems help me with this. They are like buoys in the sea. I swim to them, from one to the other; in between, without them, I am lost.’
