In Al Held’s Pradorama (1991), matrixed configurations of suspended geometries create a sense of dimensional, expanded depth within the pictorial limitations of the lithograph. Perimeters and circumferences of hollowed rectangles and cylinders appear stretched and elastic among the intervening array of solid triangles, whose extreme angles suggest movement through space. Comprising a limited palette of red, yellow, blue and green, the arrangement of forms is offset by the narrow, elongated opening of a maroon rectangle. Held’s sparse use of shade and shadow in this composition implies the organisation of geometric information as if within a vacuum, imaging multidimensional space without a centre.

Held’s lithograph was created on the occasion of the artist’s major monograph published by Rizzoli in 1991. Defying critical dictums on modernist abstraction, the concentrated forms in Pradorama represent the artist’s deft means of realising extensions and compressions of volumetric space. Pradorama opens out the two-dimensional surface to achieve an optical and transformational sensation, attesting to Held’s inimitable description of this endeavour as ‘a plastic experience.’
