A Dress (2018) by Eddie Peake, was created to coincide with his solo exhibition ‘Concrete Pitch’, at White Cube Bermondsey, London in 2018.

The photograph is one from a series of self-portraits taken in the artist’s studio using spotlights covered with pink gels, creating a warm uniform tone intended to echo the overall exhibition lighting concept. The full series of self-portraits appear in Peake’s artwork Testeen, a work comprising images projected onto a white satin curtain hanging full-length from the ceiling in a spiral configuration, creating an intimate enclosure.

The text silkscreened on the print relates to an event the artist observed on the Tiber River in Rome, when he saw, amongst other objects, a dress caught up on a rock in such a way that it appeared to both be worn by the rock and subsumed by it. This narrative was also the starting point for the artwork Slab, a wall work made up from a collection of objects cast in fibreglass and painted with Flip paint.

All the works in the exhibition, including this edition, weave autobiographical narratives and an examination of identity with more general themes of desire, the body, architecture and urban landscape.

"There’s often a sort of quest for identity in my work – and that, I think, is the staggeringly beautiful thing about being an artist. You are afforded the luxury of creating a space for yourself as an individual in the world."

— Eddie Peake
