Theaster Gates will speak at the 2025 Vision & Justice Convening this October. This year’s theme, ‘The Challenge and Promises of American Democracy’ takes inspiration from Frederick Douglass’s Civil War-era speech ‘Pictures and Progress’, which reflects on the transformative power of art and culture to reimagine democracy.

The two-day event is designed to platform visionaries working at the intersection of artistic practice and democratic engagement. It will feature conversations, performances, and presentations that explore new ideas, methods and approaches to art and justice.
