Commission

Léon Wuidar at University Hospital of Liège

Posted:

Liège, Belgium

In the early 1980s, Léon Wuidar was commissioned by Charles Vandenhove to design permanent enamelled panelling for part of a building at University Hospital CHU (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire) in Liège, alongside artists Daniel Buren, Sol LeWitt and Niele Toroni.

For the project, Wuidar developed a logical series of visual compositions. Based on dividing the square panel surface into 5×5 squares, he placed a single rectangle in each square and rotated it by 30 degrees from one field to the next. The artist decided on a pair of pastel colours for each picture field, such as light grey and pink, or light yellow and light blue. This structured approach allowed for a wide variation in colour and form, and created a visual sequence designed to help patients orient themselves around the building.
