Louise Giovanelli receives the Robson Orr TenTen Award and releases new print

Posted:

Louise Giovanelli is this year’s recipient of the Robson Orr TenTen Award and has been commissioned to create a new print for the Government Art Collection (GAC). The TenTen Award is a 10-year programme created by Sybil Robson Orr and Matthew Orr in partnership with the GAC to celebrate leading British artists and broaden the Collection. Each year, the GAC selects an artist to create a print edition for the Collection. The resulting prints are displayed in British government buildings around the world and shared with the public across the UK.

For the commission, Giovanelli has created Media Luna (2026), a new limited edition 14-colour screenprint. The work returns to one of the artist’s signature motifs, hair, extending a series that includes works such as Plexus, Axis and Equator.

For Media Luna, Giovanelli revisited a blonde wig she had used as source material for a recent group of paintings. After making photographs of the wig using coloured lights, she pushed the image through repeated stages of alteration: flipping, rotating and doubling, then projecting the image on her Manchester studio wall and photographing it again. Projected onto cello tape and other cellophane-like materials, the image acquired refracted highlights, glints and specks that heighten its artificiality and lend it the grain and flicker of film.
