In this film, which was recorded on the occasion of the exhibition Picasso to Julie Mehretu at the British Museum (7 October 2010 - 25 April 2011), Julie Mehretu discusses the importance of drawing within her artistic practice with Tim Marlow. Mehretu reveals how all of her work is derived from drawing and how this deeply intimate and exploratory practice has developed during the course of her career into a lexicon of mark making that can be seen as a particular artistic signature or language. Mehretu explores two paintings in particular detail – both of which were included in the Venice Biennale 2011 – and examines the evolution of these canvases which incorporate architectural details from Venice and New York to examine notions of historical power and urban space.
