100 years
of Takis
Takis, 1984. Courtesy Takis Foundation
This year, the Takis Foundation and White Cube commemorate the centenary of Takis’ birth, celebrating the legacy of this pioneering figure in the kinetic art movement. A self-taught artist who described himself as an ‘intuitive scholar’, Takis expanded the boundaries of art, taking it into realms previously belonging to experimental physicists.
In honour of the 100th anniversary of his birth, explore curator-led walkthroughs of Takis’ exhibitions, read a recent publication dedicated to his life and work, and discover his permanent installations in Paris.

Takis
The volume’s eponymous title ties to Takis’ solo exhibitions at White Cube Bermondsey (2021) and White Cube Hong Kong (2020–21), which were organised in close collaboration with the artist’s foundation and research centre. Illustrating many of the works in both shows, as well as the artist’s ambitious public commissions, the monograph traverses the best-known series through which Takis broached the territories of art and science and embraced the unknown.

Takis
Born Panagiotis Vassilakis in Athens, Takis (1925–2019) was a leading figure in the kinetic art movement of the 1960s. He made sculptures, paintings, performances and sound works incorporating invisible forces as a fourth dimension − especially magnetics, his lifelong subject of study.
