Jeff Wall
Since the late 1970s, Jeff Wall (b.1946) has consistently sought new ways to expand the possibilities of picture-making. Engaging with both documentary and staged modalities, the artist has contributed significantly to establishing photography as an autonomous medium. Regarded as the founder of ‘staged photography’, his celebrated large-format photographs are intricately and subtly composed from numerous individual shots. Often inspired by daily life, Wall’s photographic practice is rooted in its relationship to other art forms, including cinema, classical painting and literature – an approach which the artist terms ‘cinematography’.
This November, a major presentation bringing together over 30 key works from Wall’s oeuvre will open at White Cube Bermondsey, following his retrospective at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, Switzerland. An artist who has profoundly shaped the discourse of photography, throughout 2026, works from the show will be on view at La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona; MAAT, Lisbon; MOCA Toronto, Canada; and Gallerie d’Italia, Turin, Italy.
