Michael Armitage at Turner Contemporary, Margate, UK

Posted:

26 May – 24 September 2017

New and recent works by Michael Armitage are brought together in ‘Peace Coma’ at Turner Contemporary, the artist’s first solo exhibition in a UK institution.

Armitage's works weave together multiple narratives drawn from historical and current news media, internet gossip, and his own ongoing recollections of Kenya, his country of birth.

‘Peace Coma’ features approximately 20 paintings by the artist. Works on view include Strange Fruit (2016), inspired by a story of a Kenyan woman who was lynched after being accused of witchcraft by her relatives, and Hornbill (21st - 24th September 2013) (2014), which draws on a terrorist attack at the Westgate Shopping Centre in Nairobi.
