Theaster Gates, Julie Mehretu and Howardena Pindell Named 2026 Art Basel Awards Medallists

In this year’s Art Basel Awards, Theaster Gates and Julie Mehretu have been named Medallists in the ‘Established Artists’ category, and Howardena Pindell has been named a Medallist in the ‘Icon Artists’ category.

Launched in 2025, the Art Basel Awards is a global initiative dedicated to recognising and advancing excellence across the contemporary art world, celebrating artists and other leading figures in the field. Medallists are selected by an international jury of experts, with the awards ceremony taking place on 17 June 2026.
