Furthering her interest in the handheld pod and nascent structures, Rachel Kneebone has produced Shell, an edition of 45 (and 4 APs) unique porcelain sculptures. Mirroring the natural form and individual character of a shell, all are smooth to the touch, yet each has succumbed to the inevitable discrepancies that result from the firing process.
Following the two sell-out editions Kneebone created in 2021, the first to mark her solo exhibition at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK, and the second an exclusive edition for White Cube, Shell encapsulates the coming together of different states. A lifeform that exists in water as well as on land, physically tangible but fluid in connotation, the shell connects to Kneebone’s wider fascination with different forms of movement as they transition from liquid to solid.
As Kneebone says: ‘These works are about the process of making and feeling, each one is subtly different, each embodying the movement of the creative process as an idea takes form, becomes concrete and changes as I continue making.’
