Fullmoon@Valley Floor (2014) by Darren Almond is an image taken in Patagonia under a full moon. Almond is widely known for his long-exposure ‘Fullmoon’ series which depict a diverse range of landscapes from around the world, blanketed by darkness yet illuminated by the light of the full moon. When photographing, Almond keeps his shutter open for over a quarter of an hour, resulting in a soft-focus quality to the image which gives the final photograph a haunting, otherworldly appearance.
Printed on subtly textured paper, this work draws on both Almond’s engagement with a landscape tradition and his interest in archival film footage. Mapping the artist’s fascination with geology, history and the passage of time, the ‘Fullmoon’ series is a means for Almond to document the often-detrimental effect human intervention has had on nature.
