The two overlapping circles in Al Held’s screenprint Untitled (1968) create the sensation of suspended tension between equal and opposing forces. Commissioned by the Documenta Foundation, the print accompanied Held’s memorable participation in Documenta 4, the international contemporary art survey in Kassel, Germany. The print’s vibrant colours and elemental forms relate to Held’s late ‘Alphabet’ paintings, including the monumental 56-foot Greek Garden, presented that revolutionary year.
