One of Antony Gormley’s most celebrated works, ‘Critical Mass’ is currently on view on the roof of the De La Warr Pavilion.
The installation is composed of sixty figurative cast iron sculptures, taken from five casts of twelve different moulds of Gormley’s body, and varies from squatting to standing positions.
The sculptures themselves weigh ten times the normal density of the human form, and are cast from the outside of the plaster moulds, retaining all the physical imperfections on the sculptures surface.
The term ‘Critical Mass’ is derived from nuclear physics and refers to the necessary density within a radioactive isotope for fission to take place. When applied to social issues, ‘Critical Mass’ implies the necessary level of density within a collective that allows for something transformative to happen.
