Julie Mehretu’s ‘Grey Area’ exhibition travels to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York this month. The new body of paintings was created as part of the 15th Deutsche Guggenheim Commission in 2009.
The show’s title ‘Grey Area’ refers to the liminal, transitional states that Mehretu experienced in the cityscape of Berlin, which reflected the city’s background in the wake of its post-Communist history. It is also indicative of Mehretu’s artistic practice of layering, smudging and erasing the marks on the surface of her canvases, evident in such works as ‘Berliner Plätze’ (2008-09) and ‘Middle Grey’ (2007-09)
The Guggenheim have a produced a catalogue to accompany the exhibition, with texts by Joan Young.
