Vancouver Art Gallery are pleased to host Andreas Gursky’s extensive retrospective tour ‘Werke/Works 80 –08’. This body of work from the Dusseldorf–based photographer contains more than 150 works ranging from his student days at Folkwang Hochschule Essen to the present day. Gursky has taken the radical step to present the works on a smaller scale, breaking with his trademark large-scale format.
Gursky’s photographs are complex constructions of reality with the purpose of portraying social truths.
Abstract and figurative combine on a metaphorical level, whether he is exploring work or recreation; large-scale livestock farming or spectacular events; hypermarket commodities or mountains of garbage, each photograph contributes towards achieving Andreas Gursky’s goal: an “Encyclopaedia of Life”.
