‘Don’t Let the Bastards Cheer You Up’, a solo show by Harland Miller, presents a compilation of new paintings and montages on display at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. In the ground floor space, Miller is exhibiting a series of works entitled ‘Bad Weather’ paintings. By reproducing the dust jackets of old, iconic Penguin books, Miller’s large and painterly works adopt fictitious titles that wistfully comment on the culture of North East England, where Miller grew up.
In addition to these works, Miller is also displaying a further series of paintings based on the Yorkshire Ripper. Taking influence from the billboard information circulated by the West Yorkshire Police in 1978 as well as knowledge gained from researching his latest novel ‘Reclaim the Night’.
