Tate Modern has announced Polish born Miroslaw Balka as the 10th artist to take on the prestigious Unilever Turbine Hall commission. This will be Balka’s first public commission in England, the details of which will be kept undisclosed until the opening on 13 October 2009. A sombre and minimalist artist, Balka works with installation, sculpture and film and is known for using materials such as hair, ash, rust and soap to create his works. Dealing with deeply personal and collective experiences, his pieces are subtle and intensely serious while retaining a dark but warm humour.
