Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum will house Damien Hirst’s celebrated diamond-encrusted platinum skull for the premier stop on an international tour. The skull is a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 exquisite diamonds including the Skull Star Diamond, a pear-shaped pink diamond, inlaid on the forehead. Accompanying the famed skull is a personal selection from the museum’s 17th century collection, chosen by Hirst himself. Appearing in the Philips Wing and surrounded by Hirst’s selection of masterpieces from the Golden Age, the exhibit reveals how the fear of death has been a prevalent theme in art through the centuries.
