Sergej Jensen at Malmö Konsthall

4 Sep 2008

Malmö Konsthall is pleased to present a four-part presentation featuring artists Johanna Billing, Isa Genzken, Sergej Jensen and Josef Strau. Considered as four separate exhibits, there are a variety of different mediums on display, ranging from sculpture, painting, film/video and text-based installations.

For Sergej Jensen’s space, the paintings are all composed in a minimal way. He draws on a wide range of materials, focusing on the structure and materiality of the textiles he uses to dictate the piece, often with little interference from himself. Fabrics like linen, silk, wool or flags and old moneybags are used and treated almost as recycled readymades. The canvases have many tactile minimal gestures, as flecks of wool or frayed edges become part of the artists’ palette.

Although publicised as four individual shows, there are also interesting similarities and shared characteristics between the styles and methods of these selected artists. By investigating their various areas of interest and experiencing the exhibition as a whole, it is possible to find certain places where their works and thoughts do merge.
