In this print, American artist Fred Tomaselli employs a recurring motif from his work – that of the bird – but moves away from the visually packed and sometimes hallucinatory iconography of his paintings. Instead, he creates a well-ordered universe of birds, presented in a mock anthropological study, using sources from mail order catalogues to fill out the shapes of the various orioles from details of zips and fleece fabrics. Like all of Tomaselli’s work, this print offers a window into another, wholly imaginary visual world.
