This piece by Kris Martin, whose work is characterised by a preoccupation with the notion of time, was originally conceived in response to a commission for the Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in Belgium, Martin’s homeland. A simple certificate issued by the artist offering life after death - immortality, or an infinite amount of time - has grown to become an ongoing concept which Martin is willing to offer to anyone. Each certificate is personalised, and the time and place recorded, ironically marking a specific moment in what is to become the new owners timeless life. A number of these blank sheets were recently installed as part of Martin’s solo exhibition at PS1, New York. Pasted to the wall in a way reminiscent of street posters, the works en-masse hyped the concept of life after death as if to be the new ‘must have’.
